There is a list of similar companies that can either be manually set, or automatically found based on related Company Type, Category, or Parent Companies that have related Category or Type. In the example above, all similar companies share a mutual "Type" of "Manufacturer", which is found in the Company Details portion of the Company in Base:
Similar Companies will be generated based on Company Type first. If no other company with the same Type exists, then it will look for companies that share the same Category.
When using Categories to set the Similar Companies, it should be noted that only top-level/parent Categories will be queried against to set the Similar Categories. This means that in example above, the report will only find Similar Companies with the Category of Industry [2008340], and not ones with Packaging machinery > Controls & machine components [2008387] .
Alternatively, related companies can be manually set, which would override the query for automatic companies, as well as the default value of 7 maximum companies found. In this example, you'll see the group chose to set 11 competitors manually by entering them like so:
By doing so, the report will no longer automatically query companies based on Type, Parent, or Category, and would in turn change the Match Type field from Found to Set:
The list of Similar Companies can be either manually set, or automatically found, not both.
Relates how much incoming traffic is sent to your website(s) and a breakdown of what percentage goes to your company content vs similar companies. (Not to be confused with outgoing social sharing traffic).
Content Share represents the percentage of the current company's content page views* vs the content page views of "Similar Companies".
**Company content page views = company landing page on the website, plus all of that company's related content
Using the example above, the current company's content page views ("You") accounts for 46.8% of the incoming traffic when split amongst similar companies and their content page views.
The identity of the other letters are intentionally left anonymous in order to prevent the advertiser from directly identifying the competition. Therefore, although each letter represents one of the companies from the "Similar Companies" list, the order is scrambled.
Website share takes the data from the Content Share chart and compares it to the rest of the website(s) traffic share. Therefore, in the above example, all of the current company's content page views combined with similar companies and their content page views only account for a small fraction of the rest of the incoming traffic throughout the site.
Like the other sections of the engagement report, the Website Share and Content Share will only display results from within the selected time rage
